Today we get to know wedding photographer Tom Langford AKA Weddings by Tom. We love the fact he watches Casualty religiously every week… and his unashamed love for Ru Paul’s Drag Race!
1) What makes you happy?
Wow! That’s a deep question to begin with! I’m fairly easy to please; good food, great company and live music make me smile. I’m also lucky enough to have spent almost half my life with Rowena (my wife) as we met when we were just 16. She always know the right thing to say to cheer me up and makes me incredibly happy.
Shoot first, ask questions later!
2) What does a perfect weekend look like to you?
A perfect weekend would start with a take-away on a Friday night (Chinese/Thai would be great!) followed by a great wedding to shoot on a Saturday. Finished off by a park-run on Sunday morning or a trip to our allotment before coming home for a hot bath and a Sunday roast. I’m really bad at sitting around and like to keep active, so this is how most of my weekends go.
3) What’s your idea of a dream holiday?
I’ve been to America on holiday for the past two years and I absolutely loved it! So a long US road-trip holiday, taking in a mixture of National Park-style scenery, US cities and plenty of root beer!
4) How would you describe your personal style?
When I was at Uni, I fell in love with the Mod scene/style and that still plays a part in the way I dress. Combine that with a wardrobe full of band t-shirts, waxed Barbour coats and Dr Marten boots and you’ve pretty much summed it up.
5) What three items would you take with you to a desert island?
My wife – I hate my own company, and there’s no-one else I’d rather be stranded with than her, so she’s definitely the first thing I’d grab. My camera – whether I’m working or not, I’m permanently taking photos; so to be stranded on a beautiful island with no way to document it would be awful! I can’t really think of a third thing!? Probably something practical like matches to make fire, or just my phone, so I could call for help?? (Is that cheating?)
6) What do you love watching on TV?
I don’t actually watch that much TV, as I struggle to sit still long enough to get hooked. The only programme I watch every week is Casualty and I have done for years! Besides that, I love shows where they find old items and junk as American Pickers, Salvage Hunters etc.
7) Where’s your favourite place on earth?
It’s not one particular location, but anywhere by the sea. I’ve lived by the sea all of my life and couldn’t imagine life further inland. I’m ever feeling down or lacking inspiration, I’ll head to the sea and it always makes me feel better; whether its sat on the beach in summer, or sat in my car watching the waves on a rainy day.
8) What’s your guilty pleasure?
My wife got me into watching Ru Paul’s Drag Race and I LOVE IT! It’s so far removed from anything I’d ever usually watch, but can’t help being captivated by it all.
9) What’s your favourite film?
I’m not sure I could pick just one; but here’s my Top 3: Quadrophenia, School of Rock and This Is England.
10) What do you love about wedding photography?
I live for meeting new people and finding out their stories; combine this with my passion for emotionally charged documentary photography and you pretty much have it made as a wedding photographer! I also love the challenge of photographing people who aren’t used to being in front of the camera; making them feel relaxed enough that I can capture them in a really honest and natural way without them feeling awkward.
We’re definitely going to hell, but we’ll have all the best stories to tell. ~ Frank Turner
11) What’s your background?
I studied Photography and Fine Art at College, then straight into my degree in Photography at Portsmouth Uni. I graduated in 2009 and began freelancing whilst working part-time. I finally went full time with my photography in 2016 and haven’t looked back since. As well as shooting weddings I also shoot a lot of live music and bands, which is great.
12) What inspires you?
Lots of things, and I think you can find inspiration almost anywhere; listening to music and the memories/feeling a single song can evoke still continues to amaze and inspire. I also love looking at old photography books. I have a huge collection of books about documentary photographers and whilst none of them are wedding based, looking at how important the images they were making are now makes me really inspired about applying their craft to my wedding style.
13) What’s your favourite food?
Oooooh that’s a really tough one, as I just love food! Anything that’s made with love, good ingredients and super fresh. I tend to favour small restaurants over chain places as the food is always better, but you can’t beat home-cooked classics either!
14) How would you describe your interior style?
It’s a real mix; sure I have some Ikea (doesn’t everyone!?) but I really love old pieces of furniture too. We’re just in the process of buying a house so we’re planning interiors for our new home at the moment. We’re looking at dark, rich colours with walls full of the art & prints we’ve collected over the years too.
15) What’s your moto?
Shoot first, ask questions later! As someone who lives for capturing natural moments, if you stop to think too much or ask questions, you’ll miss the moment!! A motto I also try to live by is a Lyric by one of my favourite musicians Frank Turner: “We’re definitely going to hell, but we’ll have all the best stories to tell.”
