Glam Rock Shoot at Southend Barns

Today we hand over to stylists To Have & To Hire and venue, Southend Barns, to tell us all about this bold, edgy styled shoot…

What else is one to do when wanting to add a little sparkle and spice to their wedding? Why Glam Rock, of course.

Glam Rock is a style of rock music that started in the United Kingdom in the early 70s. Glam Rock musicians often adorned – what was classified then as ‘outrageous’ outfits, hairstyles, and makeup. Some remnants that may pop to mind are platform shoes and glitter.

For this styled shoot we wanted to interpret this style, whilst adding an elegant nip – with a modern tuck.

With current trends featuring an array of deep tones and dramatic hues, we selected a colour palette that just simply bloomed on set-up. It also performed well in unintentionally incorporating a hint of this year’s Pantone of the year 19-4052 ‘classic blue’. According to Harper’s Bazaar, bold use of colour is one of the top ten wedding trends for 2020. Furthermore are pops of colour, print mixing and statement hues, which is coincidentally exactly what we applied. As if trend setting wasn’t a part of what we do – naturally.

In terms of the décor used, we accentuated the exposed beam ceiling of the exquisite Southend Barns with a simple, yet always beautiful fairy light canopy, in marquee style. Candelabras, long candles and tall table trees added that elongated elegant feel, and assisted in creating a stunning juxtaposition of old and new.

To add a stroke of the Glam Rock ‘outrageous’ rep, we included some fabulous showstoppers including a balloon and pampas grass moon gate installation – ahem, with a cake swing in tow! The cake featured was the most strikingly beautiful, elegant and eye-catching edible translation of the theme that we could have dreamed of. Additional show-stopping features included a combination of our finest neon signs, a neon flashing bridal leather jacket, a vibrant and distinctive multi-coloured macaroon tower, PINBALL machines (which looked completely fierce with flowers above – surprisingly), an out-of-this-world Delorean (Back to the Future) car, along with a fabulous band, actually called The Deloreans.

Almost contradicting this classy and chic adaptation of Glam Rock, the ceremony room was decorated to reflect a more soft and ethereal interpretation that complimented the theme, rather than being an exact extension of it. The aisle was ‘painted’ in a combination of floating and chapel candles to create that outright romantic glow – unachievable in any other way. This accumulation of candles, along with the white and light shades of the fur rug seating, pampas grass, and bright ‘Together is a Beautiful Place to be’ neon, further highlighted a deeply romantic ambience. In this ceremony room, an on-trend minimalist set-up was adopted incorporating modern pieces, including festoon lighting, our neon (of course) and our wooden Honeycomb backdrop – that was dotted with splashes of colour from mini versions of the exquisite flower arrangements used throughout.

Southend Barns, situated in the picturesque village of Donnington, Chichester was the most perfect venue for this styled shoot. The venue is set in luscious landscaped gardens with hidden courtyards and tranquil lawn. It’s lovingly and sustainably restored barns offer a slick, contemporary location with equal amounts of rustic charm, given its 200-year-old heritage.

Last but most certainly not least, let’s give an applaud (repeatedly) to the beautifully contrasting wedding gown, which combines a draped bodice with satin spaghetti straps on a flounced, soft net ball gown, with horsehair edging. The way the dress flows like an angelic ‘smoke’ cloud is enough to take your breath away.
