Gatsby Glam – 1920s Bridal Shoot at Hayne House

As a professional makeup artist, I have long been fascinated with the roaring 20s era for fashion, glamour and sophistication. I was eager to incorporate the perfect 1920s bridal look into my portfolio for brides dreaming of a great Gatsby-style wedding…

Hayne House in Kent was my natural choice for such a shoot. The ‘Former Hunting Lodge’ at Hayne House was once home to Edward Simpson and his wife. In the 1920s they would often travel to their other house at Port Lympne where they were entertained by Charlie Chaplin.

I picked the luxurious colour palette of emerald green, gold, black and white for the tablescape. We used striking detailed dinnerware, black-stemmed martini glasses, an emerald green velvet runner, cream candles and gold cutlery. The large floral statement piece by Raven and Rye Grass was a perfect example of elaborative work. As well as wonderfully scented white garden roses, Lucy chose to use orchids and delphiniums. Hanging dendrobiums worked perfectly for the bridal bouquet and wooden arch décor provided by Bay Wedding Props.

Ink and Paper created the wedding stationery using traditional letterpress printing techniques, a method that would have been in its heyday in the 20s, lending an authentic yet modern look to the design.

The ‘bride’ wore a vintage-inspired bridal top by The Bridal Boutique of Jules. The halter neck and intricate beadwork of the top worked well paired with high-waisted wide-leg trousers.

The makeup look was flawless porcelain skin and rouge red lipstick, working in unison with strong yet soft green eyeshadow.

Gavin Harvie chose to do a modern take on the vintage Hollywood waves for Georgia but adding more texture for a contemporary twist. Honeyv Tiaras kindly lent us the striking vintage hair slide.

Iced Innovations created the three-tiered dark green and gold art deco cake, with gold stencilling and delicate white sugar orchids. I could not have asked for more!

I had high-fashion glitz and glamour in mind, with lots of exaggerated poses and movements to create something beautiful and classy – Charli May Video
