Getting to know… Holly Bobbins Photography

I’ve simply loved reading the answers photographer Holly Bobbins sent back to my questions… mainly because I think we’re pretty much the same person (and the quote at the end made me cry)! Read on to find out what a happy, sentimental and creative soul she is.

Q. What makes you happy?

A. Lots of things makes me happy … standard things, my kids, my husband but I can find joy all over the place. My husband said the happiest he’s ever seen me was watching a hermit crab on our honeymoon in Thailand. I spent about an hour watching the little chap!

Q. What does a perfect weekend look like to you?

A. As a wedding photographer most of my weekends are spent shooting weddings, but when I’m not I love walks, beer, wine, food and pottering about the house. I’m a creative soul and like to make stuff. As well as a photographer I’m also a paper artist and I’ve recently been teaching myself macrame. Love a craft 🙂

Q. Tell us something not many people know…

A. When I got married back in 2017 my husband and I picked a new married name. I don’t agree with the patriarchal system of taking a man’s name… I respect lots of people are very happy to do this of course, but it’s not for me.

A bit of back story …. my husband found out his dad was not his dad at the age 30, so the name he grew up with is actually nothing to do with him. When we got engaged we decided to pick a new name. He changed his name by deed poll, which was dead easy and only cost £18 so when we got married I took our new name. SMASH THE PATRIARCHY!!!

Q. What’s your idea of a dream holiday?

A. Sun, sea and hours of reading. I once read 6 books in a week on holiday. Perfect…

Q. How would you describe your personal style?

A. I’m not sure I have a style … the older I get the more comfortable I want to be!! I made a conscience choice last year to wear more colour as I was rather monochrome ….I’m now a freaking rainbow!!

Q. What three items would you take with you to a desert island?

A. Pens and paper …. and an endless supply of coffee??

Q. What do you love watching on TV?

A. Jeez man .. I watch SO MUCH TV frankly its embarrassing… The Handmaids Tale has blown me away recently.

I’ve watched The Office (American) and Parks and Rec three times through each and still LOVE them. If I need a cry I watch Queer Eye or Long Lost Family. Gets me every time! Anything that Shane Meadows creates. The Virtues left me reeling recently. I still think the This is England series is one of the greatest pieces of TV ever made.

Q. Where’s your favourite place on earth?

A. At home, in bed falling asleep with my man knowing the kids are safely tucked up in bed too (they are now LARGE teenagers and are often out later than I want to go to sleep!!)

Q. What’s your guilty pleasure?

A. I feel guilty for nothing I love 🙂

Q. What’s your favourite film?

A. Good Will Hunting

Q. What do you love about wedding photography?

A. The honour of being able to tell and be a part of their story. I absolutely love all of it; the stress, the nerves, the joy, the love and being there to witness that incredible moment when the couple say ‘I do’. I get the best seat in the house looking right at the couple. I still find it magic every time.

Q. What’s your background?

A. I grew up in Southampton and went to uni to study photography. I have always worked as a photographer while I raised my two kids as a single parent, until 4 years ago when I got together with my now husband.

Q. What inspires you?

A. So much… people, shapes, colours, films, music… Life’s magical… you just have to keep your eyes open.

Q. What’s your favourite food?

A. Thai every time… I’ve been working hard to be able to cook my favourites from scratch… it involves a lot of pestle and mortar action!!

Q. How would you describe your interior style?

A. Eclectic, busy and up cycled! We have a lot of ‘things’ in the house… I feel quite attached to stuff, but it all has some meaning or story behind it. One of my favourites is a printers tray filled with many things I’ve collected over the years.

Q. What’s your moto?

A. My little sister passed away seven years ago. While it was the most painful and sad thing to have happened in my life, it has also given me the gift of appreciating all the joy and beauty. She always loved these words and I think they are good ones to live by (this and anything by Dr Suess):

“Watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you

because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places.
Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”
Roald Dahl
