Our advertiser Elisa Photo has a unique edgy style which we love. We caught up with her to find out what makes her tick, and what she gets up to when she’s not shooting weddings…
Q. Hi Elisa! Firstly, can you tell us how you describe your photography style?
A. I would say my style is creative, relaxed and fun but with an edge.
Hiya. It’s me, Elisa. That’s Lisa, with an ‘E’ at the front, rather than Eliza, Alicia, Elise or Elsa: while those are all nice names, they’re just not mine.
Q. What’s your background? How did you get into wedding photography?
A. I’ve been doing photography on and off for about 15 years – both professionally and personally. I moved away from photos in my early 20s to focus on film. In 2016 I got married and realised I utterly love weddings. On the back of that I decided I wanted to girl boss it, work for myself and combine photography and weddings – boom Elisa Photo!
Q. We’ve seen you talk a bit about putting people at ease in front of the camera. What tips would you give camera-shy brides and grooms-to-be?
A. I’m the first to admit that having your photo taken is quite an unnatural experience! So with the portraits I like to make the couples move, direct them and make them laugh, add a prop and some music to relax the mood. I would also say that having a pre-wedding shoot is a great idea to get to know your photographer and get used to the way they work… and ultimately get used to being papped!
Q. What inspires you?
A. Art, music, humour, summer!
Q. What does your perfect weekend off look like?
A. Summer! Away somewhere outdoorsy, by the sea or a lake. Just kicking back, basking in the sun and drinking a cider or a G&T… Or both!
Q. How would you describe your personal style?
A. Slightly more alternative, I grew up loving pop punk and that never really left me. I mainly sport anything monochrome, but my house is very colourful and creative!
Q. We’ve heard your cameras are called Brian and Elvis. Why???!
A. My cameras are named after my two favourite singers: Brian Fallon from my fav band The Gaslight Anthem, and I’m not sure if anyone will have heard of him but Elvis, the king of rock and roll!
Q. If you’re not photographing weddings what do you like to take photos of?
A. Aside from my family, I like taking pictures of old, abandoned buildings. Things where nature has claimed back and the metal is rusty. I love seeing photos of like abandoned funfairs or towns.
Q. Who’s your ideal client/what does your ideal wedding consist of?
A. Anyone who is up for doing something a bit different, doesn’t mind getting a bit creative, who can let loose and be a bit silly. I love weddings where the couple have done loads of it themselves and the day really reflects them.
